The error message that eventually pops up (if you wait long enough) is displayed below. I called UltraTax support today to find out why this was stopping (luckily) one system in our tax office.

They know that a recent Windows Update patch is causing the issue. When asked if they knew which specific update was the problem, they had no clue and instructed me to remove all updates applied since April 14, 2015. While this can resolve the issue, it is hardly a proper solution.
Security updates are there for a reason. The only patch that needs to be removed for UltraTax to work again is Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer (MS15-032). I strongly encourage you to remove only that patch as the other updates do not seem to affect Ultra Tax.
IMPORTANT: Upgrading Internet Explorer on/after April 14th will also cause the same behavior. Rolling back an Internet Explorer upgrade applied after that date may also be necessary.
UT is not yet compatible with the latest IE security updates. This of course needs to be addressed by Thomson Reuters’ developers ASAP! Rejecting/removing an important browser security update is not exactly a good idea 😉
